こんにちは！In your country, do you have a word for when someone shows off or acts a bit too proud of themselves? In Japan we call that ドヤ顔(doya-gao).It’s a super common expression among young people, and once you know it, you’ll start hearing it everywhere. Let’s check out how to use it 😏😏😏
ドヤ顔 (doya-gao)
😏 A smug face or a proud look
ドヤ顔 comes from the Kansai dialect どや (doya), short for どうや meaning “How’s that?” or “You impressed?”
Example Sentence
A: 彼(かれ)、みんなの前(まえで褒(ほ)められてて嬉(うれ)しそうだったよ
He looked so happy being praised in front of everyone.B: 見(み)た！彼(かれ)のドヤ顔(どやがお)すごくて笑(わら)っちゃった
I saw him too! His smug face was so hilarious I couldn't help laughing.
ドヤる (sokka/sou-ka)
ドヤる is a slang verb that comes from ドヤ顔 (doya-gao) that smug, “nailed it” face. When someone ドヤる, they’re showing off, acting smug, or doing something with obvious confidence and a touch of “look at me!”
Example Sentence
A:ほらみて。今回のテスト結果はこんなところだったよ
Hey, look at this. Here's how I did on the recent test.B: うわ、A+？！めっちゃドヤってくるじゃん
Whoa, you got an A+?! You're totally showing off!
