空気を読む Sense the mood
Do you know the Japanese phrase "空気(くうき)を読(よ)む"? It translates to "read the air" in English. The word refers to the ability to understand the mood, feelings, or unspoken thoughts of others in a particular setting and act appropriately.
空気を読む(くうき を よむ)

Example Sentence
A: 2人(ふたり)がいい感じ(かんじ)だったから空気(くうき)読(よ)んで帰(かえ)ったよ
I sensed a good vibe between the two, so decided to leave them alone.B: よくやった👍

空気が重い(くうき が おもい)
(verb)The mood is heavy
Example Sentence
A: 隣(となり)の人(ひと)別れ話(わかればなし)してるから空気(くうき)重(おも)くない?
Isn’t the mood heavy? The person next to us seems to be having a breakup conversation.B: それな Yeah I know.
場の空気が凍る(ば の くうき が こおる)
(idiom)The room went cold(The atmosphere becomes awkward)
Example Sentence
A: あの人の冗談で場が凍ったよ 🥶
That person's joke froze the atmosphere.B: あらら Oh no…
場の空気を温める(ば の くうき を あたためる)
(idiom) Make a social environment more welcoming(to warm up the atmosphere)
Example Sentence
A: ミーティング遅れそうだからちょっと場を温めておいて!
I might be running late for the meeting, can you help warm up the mood until I join?B: 了解です! Got it!
