Every year, we enjoy a long weekend known as Golden Week, which spans from the last weekend of April to the beginning of May. Like many others, I typically spend this time relaxing at home or enjoying a barbecue with family and friends.
During this time, we'll introduce some terms that will enhance your understanding and appreciation of Golden Week. 🤗
はしゃぐ(hasyagu)
be hyper, get excited
Example Sentence
A: 明日(あした)からついにゴールデンウィークだー!楽(たの)しみ! Tomorrow is finally Golden Week!I’m excited.
B: いいねいいね、はしゃいでるねー!
That’s nice! You’re really getting hyped up.
ぐずる(guzuru)
get fussy ( babies or young children become irritable or restless.)
Example Sentence
A: ゴールデンウィークは家族(かぞく)でどっかいくの?
Are you going somewhere with your family during Golden Week?B: うん。でも子供(こども)がぐずるから人(ひと)ごみは避(さ)けたいなー
Yeah, but I need to avoid crowded places because the kid might get fussy.
帰省(kisei)
going back to one’s hometown
Example Sentence
A: ゴールデンウィークは何(なに)してたの?
What did you do during Golden Week?B: 実家(じっか)に帰省(きせい)してたよー
I was visiting my parents’ house!
Uターンラッシュ(U-turn rush)
the rush of people returning home
It usually means that people who have been returning to their hometowns are coming back to the city (where they live).
Example Sentence
A: Uターンラッシュになる前(まえ)に帰(かえ)ろう
Let’s head back home before the rush starts.
B: そうしよ、渋滞(じゅうたい)にはまりたくないね…
Yeah, I don’t want to get stuck in traffic…
みんなはゴールデンウィークどうだった?また来週✌️!
