This word originally means the topping of sushi. Nowadays, we often use the word in the context of casual conversation and entertainment to mean topics for stories or jokes.
Example Sentence
A: 明日(あした)ティンダーで会った(あった)人(ひと)とデートなんでしょ?
You have a date with a guy you met on tinder tomorrow right?B: そう!でも話(はなし)のネタが無(な)くて緊張(きんちょう)する…

タネ means seed of plants, figuratively mean the origin or source of something, like the seed of an idea.
Example Sentence
